The design and etching process

Working from drawings, photographs and other digital sources, Andy creates photomontage artwork and designs using state of the art imaging and editing software on themes ranging from the macabre to the sublime.

The designs are translated into CAD files and the information fed into the laser etching machine which creates a photographic 3D relief image onto wood, MDF or acrylic depending on the required surface texture and final application.

Plaster casts of the master mould are made and allowed to dry. These moulds range in complexity from a single part mould to more complex split moulds of two or more. These are now called slip casting moulds.

Slip is a simple liquid mixture of clay mixed with water. When slip is poured onto the surface of dry plaster it will draw in moisture, causing an increasingly thickened layer of solid clay to form on the surface of the plaster.

Any excess slip is poured from the mould leaving a thin layer of solid (green) clay in contact with the plaster. The mould can then be released and the green body removed.
